In 1969, PRAB was started by a modest group of Puerto Rican volunteers who organized to provide English classes to recently-immigrated Latinos. PRAB also assisted clients with securing a high school equivalency diploma. In October 1971, the organization was incorporated as a 501(C)3 private non-profit. By 1974, PRAB began to receive funding from the New Jersey State Department of Education for its E.S.L. and G.E.D. programs. Shortly thereafter, funds were secured to establish the first full time, bilingual/multicultural Day Care Center for children, ages 2 ½ to 5, in New Jersey. This provided a unique and much needed multi-cultural curriculum.
Over the years, through grants, and merging with other providers, PRAB has grown into a comprehensive human services organization providing services through various departments, including: the Housing Coalition of Central Jersey, the New Brunswick Family Success Center, Middlesex County’s Low Income Home Energy and Weatherization Assistance Programs, Youth Services, Social Services and Early Childhood Programs.
To further expand its service delivery, in October 2009, PRAB obtained the distinction of Community Action Agency for Middlesex County West. These departments are staffed by approximately 250 trained multi-cultural, bi-lingual, interdisciplinary, and socially conscious individuals who provide an array of programs and services.
PRAB has evolved into an effective bi-lingual/multi-cultural primary service provider in the Central New Jersey area. Through this diverse approach, PRAB serves as a pro-active agent for individuals and families to address their existing needs due to societal issues such as language barriers, discrimination, and lack of cultural competency. All activities and programs are designed to ensure sensitivity to the values and cultures of the community and the families being served. As a result, PRAB has developed the expertise to serve all people regardless of age, race, creed, color, national origin, ancestry, familial status, sex, sexual orientation or functional impairment.
