AMARD&V Summer Program
Artists Mentoring Against Racism, Drugs and Violence (AMARD&V): Healing through the Arts Summer Program
The AMARD&V Summer Program helps central New Jersey at–risk youth between the ages of 10 and 16 to acquire knowledge, skills and understanding about the performing and visual arts through an interdisciplinary curriculum that emphasizes hands–on learning and art making, mentored by professional teaching artists in a community–based setting. The goal is to empower young people to transform their lives, their attitudes about themselves, and their community, as well as develop skills that equip them for a successful education and a healthy future.
AMARD&V is a partnership between Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Community Health Promotion Program, Rutgers University Latino Center for Arts and Culture, PRAB, and Suydam Street Reformed Church in New Brunswick.

In 1999 four hundred Latino leaders from diverse organizations across the State of New Jersey convened a conference that concluded in the creation of the Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey (LLANJ).
The mission of LLANJ is:
To mobilize and empower Latino communities to obtain political, economic, and social equity and;
To unify organizations and individuals in advocating for the rights of Latinos throughout the state of New Jersey.
To carry out the mission, a Board of Delegates was elected and various working committees were formed. Our vision statement is a product of the work of the committees and the deliberations of the Board of Delegates. “The Vision” describes New Jersey as it ought to be. LLANJ presents it as a challenge to public and private leaders to have a State that can lead the nation in carrying out an inclusive strategy that empowers all residents to attain a superior quality of life.
The LLANJ vision embraces a Latino Horizon which enriches all of New Jersey’s citizens through the following principles:
- Opportunities open to all
- We educate every child
- Immigrants are a cornerstone
- Health disparities are eliminated
- Discrimination is rooted out
This Vision is a challenge to New Jersey’s leaders in both the private and public sectors. Those that aspire to leadership in our state must unite all peoples if this Vision is to become reality.
LLANJ wants to work with all those possessing the will and plans to accomplish the immense task at hand. We look forward to dialogue and analysis with others to perfect this vision, and to put into motion the forces that will bring it about.

New Brunswick Domestic Violence Awareness Coalition
The New Brunswick Domestic Violence Awareness Coalition seeks to increase community awareness of domestic violence, to help prevent violence, and to connect survivors to resources in their community. In October 2002, during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, education and awareness raising activities were held in New Brunswick, culminating in a community march against domestic violence. The New Brunswick Domestic Violence Awareness Coalition led these activities and its mission continues today. The Coalition is comprised of numerous local human service agencies and each year, they host the Annual March and Rally against Domestic Violence that takes place in October.

The Puerto Rican Action Board
In 1969, PRAB was started by a modest group of Puerto Rican volunteers who organized to provide English classes to recently-immigrated Latinos. PRAB also assisted clients with securing a high school equivalency diploma. In October 1971, the organization was incorporated as a 501(C)3 private non-profit. By 1974, PRAB began to receive funding from the New Jersey State Department of Education for its E.S.L. and G.E.D. programs. Shortly thereafter, funds were secured to establish the first full time, bilingual/multicultural Day Care Center for children, ages 2 ½ to 5, in New Jersey. This provided a unique and much needed multi-cultural curriculum.
Over the years, through grants, and merging with other providers, PRAB has grown into a comprehensive human services organization providing services through various departments, including: the Housing Coalition of Central Jersey, the New Brunswick Family Success Center, Middlesex County’s Low Income Home Energy and Weatherization Assistance Programs, Youth Services, Social Services and Early Childhood Programs.
To further expand its service delivery, in October 2009, PRAB obtained the distinction of Community Action Agency for Middlesex County West. These departments are staffed by approximately 250 trained multi-cultural, bi-lingual, interdisciplinary, and socially conscious individuals who provide an array of programs and services.
PRAB has evolved into an effective bi-lingual/multi-cultural primary service provider in the Central New Jersey area. Through this diverse approach, PRAB serves as a pro-active agent for individuals and families to address their existing needs due to societal issues such as language barriers, discrimination, and lack of cultural competency. All activities and programs are designed to ensure sensitivity to the values and cultures of the community and the families being served. As a result, PRAB has developed the expertise to serve all people regardless of age, race, creed, color, national origin, ancestry, familial status, sex, sexual orientation or functional impairment.
